Description

 

 


Day 1: Arrival in Tbilisi
Depart for Tbilisi. Transfer from Tbilisi airport to the hotel. Overnight stay in Tbilisi.



Day 2: Tbilisi
Breakfast at the hotel. A moderate combination of sightseeing and a walking tour of Tbilisi: Old and New towns. The city offers a great variety of sights, most of them very ancient. All the places of interest in the Old Town are very close to each other, within a few minutes' walk. The trip will start by visiting an important historic part of the old city - Metekhi Church, then walk up to the brick-domed Sulphur Baths. From the Baths the guests will head up the hill to visit Narikala Sighnaghi  the City of LoveFortress - one of the oldest fortifications in the city. Afterwards continue to the Synagogue, Sioni Cathedral and Anchiskhati Church. This marks the end of the Old Town. After lunch visit the stunning treasury of the Georgian National Museum, before taking a stroll along Rustaveli Avenue - the main street in Tbilisi. Drive to the Botanical Gardens, find out about Tbilisi's flora and fauna and immerse yourself in the green, tranquil environment. Continue to Mtatsminda Park, one of the main hallmarks of Tbilisi. At the top of the hill, the beautiful, peaceful park spreads over more than 1 sq km, with wonderful views. Rest in the park. It's time to take pictures and enjoy the picturesque views of the city. Dinner in the restaurant with folklore show program. Overnight stay in Tbilisi.






Day 3: Tbilisi - David Gareja - Sighnaghi (wine tour) - Tbilisi
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to David Gareja, which is a remarkable rock-hewn monastery complex located on the semi-desert slopes of Mount Gareja, some 105 km southeast of Tbilisi. The first monastery was founded by Davit, one of the 13 Syrian Fathers, who came to Georgia to strengthen the Christian faith in the 6th gremicentury. Later, altogether 19 rocky monasteries were established. The best known is Larva Monastery that, according to a legend, shelters a part of the spiritual treasure from Jerusalem. The complex includes hundreds of cells, churches, chapels, refectories and living quarters hollowed out of the rock face. The healthy 35 minutes climb uphill to limestone caves is well worth it as when reaching the peak the breathtaking views are unsurpassed. The view seems endless, towards the south are the plains of Azerbaijan and down below is a huge canyon in which the main area of ​​Davit Gareja is located. Proceed to Signagi - a rare example of a historic city which kept its style over the centuries with open traditional balconies, a unique fortress with churches and towers built into it and beautiful narrow streets. Signagi, also known as "the city of love", overlooks the Alazani valley and offers visitors magnificent views of the Great Caucasus Range. Return to Tbilisi. Dinner and stay overnight.


 

Day 4: Tbilisi - Mtskheta-Ananuri-Gudauri-Tbilisi
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Mtskheta - the ancient capital of Georgia and an important religious centre. It is situated at the convergence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi Rivers. There are a number of very significant archaeological and religious monuments in and around the town: Jvari Monastery (6th century) - standing on the rocky mountaintop, with its architectural forms and decorative elements, Jvari is harmoniously connected with the landscape and overlooks Mtskheta; ananuri forest,historicalSvetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) - a grandiose cathedral of cross-dome design, known as the burial site of Christ's mantle and one of the major Orthodox Georgian temples. Drive 157 km from Tbilisi, to the southern slopes of the main Caucasus range, along the Georgian military highway. This ancient route through the Caucasus has been much celebrated by everyone from poets to guidebook writers. These places are glorified by their nature with high mountains, gorges, passes, lakes and small rivers. On the way all tourist attractions including Ananuri fortified ensemble - built in the 16th century, once belonging to the Duke of Aragvi, located on the left bank of the Aragvi River. Photo stops and walking in the ski resort of Gudauri. Lunch en-route. Arrive in Tbilisi. Overnight stay in Tbilisi.


 

Day 5: Tbilisi - Gori - Uplistsikhe - Akhaltsikhe
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Gori, which is the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Photo stop in the center of the city there is the house where Stalin was born, his personal railway carriage and the Museum of Stalin. Afterwards visit Uplistsikhe, which is the oldest cave town in Georgia. Back in the first millennium BC it was a flourishing city situated on the great east-west trade route, the Silk Road. Visitors can still walk among the ancient streets, rock-carved theatre, royal halls, pharmacy, pagan temples and Christian churches, while the remains of granaries and large clay wine vessels give us some clue as to the daily life of the inhabitants. After lunch drive to Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Arrive in Akhaltsikhe. Hotel accommodation and dinner. Overnight stay in Akhaltsikhe.



Day 6: Akhaltsikhe-Vardzia-Akhaltsikhe
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Vardzia cave town, which was built in the XII-XIII centuries by Queen Tamar. Initially it was planned as a town-fortress, but later on the complex turned into a well defended monastery and important political, cultural, educational and the spiritual center of the country. The complex stretches over half a kilometer along the river Mtkvari and has 19 tiers. There used to be about 3000 caves. It's got a church hewn out in rock with amazing 12th century frescos. Vardzia also includes dwelling quarters, small hall-type churches, refectories, wine cellars, pharmacy, etc. En route we have a photo stop at Khertvisi fortress (10th century). After lunch return to Akhaltsikhe and visit Rabati Castle complex - the Symbol of Tolerance, which was built in the 9th century and includes Jakhelis' residence, ruins of the oldest market, castle, museum, Mosque, Catholic, Armenian, and Greek churches. Its architectural variety emphasizes the influence of many conquerors and old civilizations. Dinner. Overnight stay in Akhaltsikhe.



Day 7: Akhaltsikhe-Borjomi-Akhaltsikhe
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Borjomi. On the way visit Green monastery - built in the dark green forest. You feel a sense of mystery while walking into the territory of the preserved area. The monastery was built in the IX century. In XVI century while attacked by Shah-Tamaz, the monastery was destroyed and many monks were killed. The spots of their blood still remain on the stones in the spring near the church. Arrive in Borjomi. We start our pleasant walk in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, which is one of the largest parks in Europe (WWF). It covers more than 85,000 hectares of native forest and sub-alpine and alpine meadows, home to rare species of flora and fauna. Visit the mineral water park where you can taste the famous water of Borjomi. Walking along the river leads to its source (3 km), where you can also see a sulphur water pool. After lunch visit the Summer Palace of the Russian Tsar in Likani. In the evening return to Akhaltsikhe. Dinner and stay overnight.



Day 8: Departure
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer from hotel to Tbilisi international airport and departure.
