Culture and Art

Georgia is an ancient country with a unique and rich culture which dates back thousands of years.  Its legendary skills and culture has transcended national borders and has played a significant role in the development of mankind across Europe.

The impressive architecture of the ancient monasteries, fortresses and houses can be experienced throughout Georgia. The world renowned art, music, colorful folk dances and jewellery blends in with the rich spiritual and secular literature and gilded icons.  This, as well as the exceptional hospitality of the Georgian people forms an integral part of this ancient country.

The geographical position of Georgia which lies on the border between European and Asian continents played a big part on the development of its culture which absorbed Near-Eastern, European and local Caucasian traditions. The important trade routes crossing the territory of Georgia which connects the north with the south and the east with the west were instrumental in the formation of new cultures, traditions, trends, tendencies, doctrines etc.

The ancient Oriental wisdom of the East blended with the progressive dynamic culture of the West and influenced all the spheres of culture in Georgia. The period between the 11th and the 12th centuries were seen as the Renaissance of Georgian states when monks in academies, churches and monasteries put forward new humanistic ideas. Even as far back as the Middle Ages philosophy, historiography, theology, law, poetry and art prospered in Georgia.

There was great emphasis on the development of architecture, astronomy, geography and other means of acquiring and broadening knowledge. Applied arts began to arise and thrive, especially jeweler's business and the art of metals processing (chasing) which is still prospering to this day.

The bloom period of secular culture occurred in the 19th century when Georgian writers and artists under the influence of Europe contributed to the wealth of national and world art. The most prominent place in this treasure-chest of spiritual culture is occupied by musical and dancing folklore, the art of harmonious choral singing and national dances which is recognized all over the world and is uniquely Georgian.
