Day 1 Tbilisi – Mtskheta - Tbilisi

Arrive at Tbilisi International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Tbilisi. After breakfast we travel to Mtskheta, the 3000 year old capital of the ancient Kingdom of Iberia (Georgia) and an important religious centre with its spectacular mountains and valleys. It is situated at the convergence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi Rivers. The impressive 6the century Jvari church overlooks Mtskheta and the valley, and houses the large wooden cross that was erected on the site of an old pagan temple to commemorate St Nino, the female evangelist who converted Georgia to Christianity in the 4th century. We then visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where the Robe of Christ is buried and admire the exquisite frescos and carvings. The cathedral has a fascinating history, and is the second largest religious building in Georgia. Both Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

After lunch we return to Tbilisi and embark on a sightseeing tour of Old Tbilisi, a charming town built along the twisting valley of the Mtkvari River. We start the tour in Old Tbilisi at the 13th century Metekhi Church with the equestrian statue of the city’s royal founder keeping vigil above the steep cliffs of the Mtkvari River. The church has been destroyed and rebuild many times during its existence, and during the Tsarist regime it was even used as a prison. From there we continue to the Synagogue, the 7th century Sioni Cathedral. It is considered one of the most sacred places in the country since it houses the Holy Cross of St Nino, the young woman who converted Georgia to Christianity in the early 4th century.

We then pay a visit to the 6th century Anchiskhati Basilica, the oldest church in the town. Afterwards a car will take us up to 4th century Narikala Fortress which is perched on the mountain top with breathtaking views of Tbilisi. See from close up the Mother of Georgia statue holding her cup of wine to greet friends and the sword to warn her enemies. From there we visit the 17th century brick domed sulphur baths which is an inextricable part of Georgian history and culture. Enjoy a traditional Georgian dinner at a local restaurant, and overnight in Tbilisi.
